Giving Wings to the Nation

IndiGo to conclude wide-body damp lease operations with Norse Atlantic Airways effective 25 October 2026; Reaffirms long-term long-haul growth strategy

Ludhiana, August 01, 2026 (News Team): Due to the challenging operating environment triggered by the ongoing geopolitical tensions, IndiGo today announced that it will discontinue its wide-body operations effective 25 October 2026 and conclude its damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways effective 31 October 2026. IndiGo flights between Mumbai and Amsterdam will be transitioned to be operated using its Airbus A321XLR, effective 25 October 2026. The airline will temporarily discontinue its services to and from London Heathrow until such time that its A350-900s are delivered.

With the objective of starting limited long-haul operations to fast-track learning, develop capabilities, and establish brand presence in preparation for its Airbus A350 operations, IndiGo entered into a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for six Boeing 787-9 aircraft in early 2025. This enabled IndiGo to commence services to markets in the UK and Europe, while accelerating the development of the operational capabilities, commercial expertise and customer insights required to support its future widebody ambitions. Over this period, the airline has been able to build critical competencies across long-haul network planning, customer experience, crew operations, maintenance, airport handling, revenue management, and international partnerships.

The operating environment, however, has changed considerably since the programme was announced, with significant escalation in costs. Airspace constraints, elevated fuel costs and currency pressures have impacted route efficiency, schedule integrity, connectivity and overall competitiveness. These factors have created operational and economic challenges at a time when volatility across aviation markets has reduced industry-wide risk appetite, prompting a comprehensive review of the project and evaluation of possible alternative solutions.

Every great journey begins long before the road disappears over the horizon. In the process, the Made-in-India SUV climbed to altitudes of -154 metres to 5,364 metres above sea level, endured temperatures ranging from -12°C to 43°C and encountered an extraordinary diversity of roads, climates, cultures and languages. It was a journey that demanded consistency as much as capability, with every kilometre serving as a demonstration of the Kylaq's engineering, durability and everyday dependability under vastly different driving conditions.

The Kylaq
The Kylaq is Škoda Auto's first sub-four-metre SUV developed specifically for India and is based on the locally engineered MQB-A0-IN platform, created through close collaboration between teams in India and the Czech Republic. Powered by a 1.0-litre TSI engine producing 85 kW (114 PS) and 178 Nm of torque, it is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic torque converter. The first flight arrived at NIA from Lucknow today morning, while the first departure was to Bengaluru shortly thereafter.

Launching operations to and from NIA marks a significant milestone, for IndiGo, in further strengthening regional connectivity and enhancing travel options for customers across Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh. IndiGo will directly connect the airport to over 16 destinations across India. IndiGo temporarily suspends operations to six international destinations as part of network optimization; Retains 1,800+ weekly international flights despite adjustments

Ludhiana, June 04, 2026 (News Team): In view of a traditionally softer demand in the upcoming quarter and an incredibly challenging cost environment, IndiGo has decided to make temporary adjustments to a limited segment of its international network including temporary suspension of operations to Langkawi, Krabi, Ho Chi Minh, Hong Kong and Shanghai starting 1 July 2026, and Siem Reap effective 3 July 2026, until 30 September 2026. IndiGo will resume bookings for all the impacted services starting 1 October 2026; however, should the environment become favourable, IndiGo stands prepared to reinstate these services earlier than scheduled, in appropriate lead time.

Notably, the airline has managed to retain majority of its international operations, i.e. over 1,800 weekly international flights, despite this realignment. These measured changes are designed to align capacity with current market conditions and demand trends, while ensuring the airline maintains reliability and network integrity across its global destinations. The airline will continue to monitor the situation given the elevated operating costs and continued airspace restrictions.

These steps reflect the airline’s proactive approach to managing capacity responsibly and minimizing inconvenience to customers, while maintaining readiness to respond quickly to favorable changes in the market conditions. Amidst unfavorable cost and operational environment, IndiGo temporarily discontinues flights to and from Manchester starting 31 August 2026

Ludhiana, June 03, 2026 (News Team): Due to continuing international airspace constraints leading to significantly increased flight duration and a challenging cost environment, IndiGo is having to temporarily discontinue its flight operations to and from Manchester with effect from 31 August 2026. Consequent to this decision, the airline plans to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, taken on damp / wet lease, to Norse Atlantic Airways. IndiGo will continue to operate all its remaining long-haul flights as planned.

IndiGo had damp leased six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025. The objective behind this project was to make strategic inroads to establish the IndiGo brand in the European market, ahead of the commencement of services using its own Airbus A350 aircraft. However, the airline has since experienced a significant impact of prevailing industry‑wide challenges, including geopolitical developments in the Middle East, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, severe airspace constraints, and foreign exchange volatility resulting in operating costs being considerably higher than originally envisaged.

Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President - Network Planning & Revenue Management, IndiGo, said, “We inducted these wide-body aircraft on a short-term basis to fast-track our connectivity to high potential long-haul destinations such as Manchester, and witnessed very encouraging demand response. It is, therefore, unfortunate that longer flying times due to airspace constraints coupled with dramatically escalating costs compelled us to take the decision to temporarily discontinue our India – Manchester services. We would like to thank our customers, trade partners in India and in the UK, and Manchester Airport for their amazing support. The response and support for these services have reinforced our belief in the opportunity for IndiGo’s long-haul ambitions, and this discontinuation is temporary in nature. We look forward to serving this route again at the earliest viable opportunity and are exploring innovative solutions to continuing our collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways.”
